Our skaters train year-round, play locally April through June, and travel the province, the continent and even globally playing roller derby.
Five competitive teams call Calgary Roller Derby home. Our three house teams are made up of skaters of all skill levels and experiences, from rookies playing their first career games to veterans. Our house teams are most likely to be found skating in Calgary and around the province. The B-52 Bellas, Cut Throat Car Hops and Thrashin’ Lassies are mixed-skill rosters made up exclusively of Calgary Roller Derby skaters who meet stringent attendance and volunteer requirements and train hard with their league mates year-round.
We’re also home to two travel teams for Calgary Roller Derby skaters who want to experience another level of competition. The B-level Jane Deere and A-level All Stars are selected through a tryout process held at least once per year. Jane Deere competes regionally throughout the year, including at the local Flat Track Fever tournament where they were champs in 2018. The All Stars compete at WFTDA tournaments internationally against the best teams in the world. In 2017, they skated at WFTDA Division 1 playoffs in Malmö, Sweden.
Calgary Roller Derby just couldn’t exist without our dedicated and talented officials and volunteers. Reffing roller derby requires not just great skating skills, but a thorough understanding of the rules of roller derby. Our referees and non-skating officials attend our practices and scrimmages regularly as well as staffing our games, along with support from officials in our extended derby community. Somehow, our Head Referee Squid Vicious has memorized all our numbers, an impressive feat as we add new skaters annually. We love ’em, even when they send us to the box. Let us know if you’d like to learn to officiate with us – on or off-skates!
Our incredible volunteers ensure we can run our local events flawlessly! Our volunteer corps includes friends and family members of our skaters, rookie and future Calgary Roller Derby skaters, and specialists such as our web developer Carolina, and our loquacious announcing crew led by Stay Pufft. Our next new skater training program starts Sept. 2018.
CRDA is always recruiting! We welcome women over 18 of all levels who have a positive attitude to join us as new skaters. As well, we are recruiting for Team Officially Awesome – this gang of men and women are our refs and non-skating officials.
